EZ MOOR
AN EASY-TO-USE
SHIP MOORING LINE
COMPUTER PROGRAM
ANNOUNCEMENT
A new booklet is being prepared to help waterfront personnel understand and use EZ MOOR on a routine basis. The booklet will be entitled "MOORED - SHIP BOOKLET for WATERFRONT PERSONNEL". The booklet will be available in August 08'.
-
Analyzes forces in mooring lines fastening large Naval and commercial
ships alongside piers subjected to heavy weather from any direction.
-
Calculates mooring line tension and factors-of-safety based on mooring
line breaking strength.
-
Calculates forces applied to pier fixtures and ship chocks.
-
A six-degree-of-freedom math model is used, allowing ship movements
and rotations in three-dimensional space─surge, sway, heave, roll,
pitch and yaw.
-
Accepts wind, water and tidal disturbances.
-
Models mooring lines with multiple parts and user-specified elasticity. Contains
tabulated values of mooring line properties for steel and synthetic
ropes.
-
Provides representative values of hull and superstructure sail areas
and wind and water forces.
-
Fenders, camels, floats and other ship offsetting
devices are taken into account.
-
Contains an optimization routine which
finds the optimum docking location of a ship alongside a pier.
-
Requires
less than one hour to input data and get results.
-
The EZ MOOR USER MANUAL
assists in preparing data and provides guidance in developing the
mooring line network. Examples of moorings
of various vessels are included to guide the user.
-
The EZ MOOR THEORETICAL MANUAL develops the mathematical foundation
and provides insight into the physics of ship mooring.
-
The EZ MOOR COMPACT
DISK (CD) provides the computer program in the Microsoft EXCEL format. Input
data and output results are provided in a clear spreadsheet format.
-
EZ
MOOR applies to quasi-static environmental loading conditions as defined
in the Navy Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) document
UFC-4-159-03, 3 October 2005, DESIGN: MOORINGS, Types I and
II mooring service types.
NOTICE: WHEN YOU PURCHASE A COPY OF EZMOOR YOU EFFECTIVELY PREPAY FOR CONSULTING SERVICES CONCERNING ITS APPLICATION AND INTERPRETATION OF STANDARD ITEMS OF NAVAL CONTRACT REQUIREMENTS. THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT WITH RESPECT TO THE ASSISTANCE I WILL PROVIDE. MY GOAL IS TO REMOVE THE BURDEN OF MOVING UP THE LEARNING CURVE.
EZ MOOR is designed and produced by
Dr. Donald C. Tolefson.
His ship
mooring experience covers a 19-year period and involves multiple shipyards.
He has converted his experience into an easy-to-use computer tool for
both experts and non-experts. Plant visitations to teach the physics of
ship mooring are part of the offering.

Seminar - learn the physics of moored ships
and the network of mooring lines.
Consulting - on-site and internet calculations
of mooring line forces for heavy weather plans.
Marine Engineering Services
including failure analyses, equipment selection and engineering calculations
are available utilizing the services of the website owner (Dr. D. C. Tolefson,
45-years experience) and Mr. Charles Garland, PE (50-years experience).
NEW! EZ Moor Magnetic Ship Hull Mooring Rings
Temporarily attach EZ Moor mooring rings on a steel ship hull at pier
level or any other preferred location, and tie-off breasting and spring
lines at optimum 900 and 00 angles for maximum
holding power.
The problem of poor mooring line angles is generally the result of
an undesirable but necessary geometrical mismatch between the tie-points
on the ship and the bollards, bitts and cleats on the pier. This problem
can now be solved by placing an EZ Moor magnetically-held mooring ring
on the ship hull directly opposite a pier fitting and get maximum benefit
of a 900 breasting line angle, for example. Similarly, place
an EZ Moor mooring ring at pier level but horizontally displaced from
a pier fitting and get maximum benefit from a horizontal, longitudinally
disposed spring line.
In the manner just described, EZ Moor magnetic mooring rings permit
holding a ship in place, almost motionless against the external effects
of mild winds and nearby passing ships. This allows, of course, the
uninterrupted loading and off-loading of liquid and bulk cargo and the
comfortable movement of people and passengers
across the space between ship and pier.
There are two styles of mooring rings available.
Friction Rings - provide resistance to line pulls parallel to the side
of the vessel (spring lines).
Breasting Rings - provide resistance to line pulls perpendicular to
the side of the ship (breasting lines).
